One of the most ancient and hauntingly beautiful areas in Europe. Called Eryri (the place of eagles) in Welsh, Snowdonia welcomes visitors to a breathtaking natural environment, with Snowdonia National Park at its heart and much, much more. People have lived, worked and thrived in this unique Celtic principality for more than 5000 years. Their legacy is a land which will fascinate the visitor with its rich opportunities for adventure, activity and discovery, its fascinating history and its ancient, musical language and culture.

Bala is the home of the largest natural lake in Wales, Llyn Tegid, where watersports of all types can be enjoyed with or without expert instruction. Nearby, the National White Water, Canolfan Tryweryn offers white knuckle rafting and much more. A wealth of outdoor activities literally are on the doorstep from rock climbing, gorge walking, canyoning, pony trekking, quad biking to mountain biking in the stunning Coed Y Brenin Forest trails and more! If all this sounds all a bit like too much hard work, why not take a gentle stroll or drive and take in some of the most breathtaking scenery in the United Kingdom.

The lake in winter The track to the cottage

How to get to the cottage

Take the road for Bala in North Wales. Go through Bala in the direction of Dolgellau (Dol-geth-lye). 6 miles from Bala on the A494 you find the small village of Llanuwchllyn (Clan-ook-clin). Notice the filling station on your right; do not turn left into the village but stay on the A494. A further 1.3 miles from the filling station, just past a lay-by and on a sweeping right bend in the road slow down! At the small chapel on your right (at Rhosdylluan) you need to turn left and across a small metal bridge on to a single track lane. After about a quarter of a mile along the lane the road forks. Take the right fork on to a track up the hill (across another small wooden bridge). At the end of the track you will find Llechwedd Fwyalchen and a magical world.
If you have a sat nav then you can enter the post code (LL23 7UG). The centre of the post code location is on the lane south east of the chapel off the main A494 road. But the last few hundred yards from the fork and up the track to the cottage (at 52.834895,-3.690956) may not be shown on your device.

Look at the location in a Google Maps view.

The farm track that leads up to the house is quite rough and can be quite daunting if you haven't been there before. The secret of getting by is simply to take it very slowly and carefully and you will be okay. Vehicles with very low sides such as sports cars may have more difficulty then standard cars. We have no difficulty with our Volkswagen Polo and the secret is to take it slow and easy. The advantage is that you have absolute peace and quiet as there are no other houses at the end of the track so there are no intrusions.

Get your provisions in Bala as there are no closer supermarkets. You can also get a bag of logs and tinder in many of the shops. The bathroom is downstairs in the house so bring your dressing gown and slippers! Assume you will need toilet paper, dishwasher tabs, washing powder etc. Put your rubbish in the large wheelie bin situated just after you turn off the A494. The Eagles is the local pub in Llanuwchllyn, which serves good standard food. There is a lake and waterfall up the hill at the back of the house which is very secluded, ideal for a little skinny-dipping! Slate floors are difficult to clean - so to avoid heartbreak - you should leave your muddy boots in the conservatory!
